What Does My NDIS Plan Actually Cover? A Clear Guide for 2026

Most people receive their first NDIS plan feeling unsure about what it actually covers. This guide breaks it down simply — three funding categories, what’s not included, and how to make sure you’re using your plan effectively.
The Three NDIS Funding Categories
Every NDIS plan is built around three categories. Each one covers a different part of your life.
Core Supports
Your everyday category. Covers personal care, transport, consumables, and community participation. The most flexible part of your plan — around 60–70% of most budgets. Funding can be moved between Core subcategories as your needs change.
Capacity Building Supports
Your growth category. Funds therapy (occupational therapy, psychology, speech pathology), support coordination, and skill-building programs. Focused on building your long-term independence.
Capital Supports
Your equipment and housing category. Covers assistive technology, home modifications, and Specialist Disability Accommodation. Every item must be pre-approved by the NDIA. Funds cannot be moved to other categories.
What the NDIS Does Not Cover
Understanding the limits avoids surprises. The NDIS will not fund:
- Day-to-day living costs unrelated to your disability — rent, food, utilities
- Medical treatments covered by Medicare
- Mainstream schooling or education services
- Support that is the responsibility of state or territory governments
If something sits in a grey area, a support coordinator can help you work out whether it qualifies. Learn more about support coordination on the Senami website.
How Is Your Plan Managed?
You choose how your funding is accessed and spent. There are three options:
- Self-Managed — You pay providers directly and claim reimbursements. Maximum flexibility, including access to unregistered providers.
- Plan-Managed — A registered plan manager handles invoices on your behalf. Less admin, same provider choice.
- NDIA-Managed — The NDIA pays your providers directly. No admin required but restricted to registered providers only.
Many participants start plan-managed and move toward self-management over time. Senami’s plan management team can help you decide what’s right for your situation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my NDIS funding for mental health support?
Yes — if your mental health condition is permanent and significantly impacts daily functioning. Psychology and counselling sit under Capacity Building. Senami offers NDIS-aligned mental health support for participants across Australia.
What happens if I spend funding in the wrong category?
The NDIA may require repayment of incorrectly spent funds. Working with a plan manager or registered provider like Senami helps keep your spending on track and compliant.
Can I change providers once my plan is active?
Yes. Participant choice and control is a core NDIS principle. You can switch providers at any time, subject to any notice period in your service agreement.
Do unspent NDIS funds roll over to my next plan?
Generally, no. Unspent funds do not carry over. Review your budget regularly so you’re not leaving support on the table at the end of your plan period.
